Take pride in where you come from. Dress yourself in the colors and the materials of the natural seasons, and let them make the patterns.
In an era where fast fashion dominated and clothing is valued solely for its aesthetics, I am captivated by the rich history of Dutch traditional dress. These garments, having great religious significance, were intricately linked to distinct regions. Throughout the county, variations in attire could be discerned through unique shapes, colors, motifs and patterns—all crafted from natural fibers such as cotton, wool and linen. Clothing held profound meaning and value, a sentiment I aim to cherish through my work.
Utilizing a color-sorting system of my own design, I craft patterns for knitted headwear based on photographs I have captured of the Dutch landscape. These patterns, generated through my system, are then fashioned into headwear, reflecting not only my admiration for Dutch bonnets, but also the essence of traditional costumes.
The photos serving as the system’s input are carefully chosen to capture the ever changing colors of the Dutch landscapes across seasons. As such, the colors and hues are intimately tied to specific places, times and seasons. Made from natural materials, the headwear celebrates the continuous cycle of the seasons , the reconnection with local nature and the pride that comes along.
