Play is key

What if decoration could serve as a reminder for people to stay playful? This question is derived from Erving Goffman’s theory of how you can use keys to influence people’s behaviour. I was fascinated by the quote: ‘’Play is like a decoration of life, it is like an ornament, a sweet glaze, flowers, sprinkles, etc…’’ (Homo Ludens 1938). I combined this with the theory of Goffman and ended up making a collection of interior accessories. I want to show people that decorations aren’t just for looks. Decoration can be a form of communication, and when used well it can have a powerful impact on our well-being. Decoration can boost the mood and help loosen up! It has the ability to transform our spaces into havens of joy. I want to tell people it’s okay to play and be silly. Life should be fun, not just at parties, but every day! Formality does not equal stiffness.
